FRIDAY THOUGHTS

Friday 6 March 2015

You may have noticed it's been a bit quiet around these parts this month. My last post was on 1st February - over a month ago. Since then I've been taking a break from this blog and contemplating what posts I want to write in the future.

Lately, I've noticed a shift in blogging and the online community. I've noticed posts/tweets about how social media infiltrates our lives, and a patronising tone if you share your world with the Internet. Obviously this isn't everyone, and the general feeling in the community is a happy one but it's just some observations.

Living in the 21st century, where Instagram and Twitter are some of the main forms of communication, there is a degree of sugar coating we sprinkle on our lives. The white floors, the pristine nails, the delicious food; life isn't like that all the time. We all know that. What we see on filtered photos isn't the 24/7. We've got into the habit of sharing everything we do with the Internet and our followers. Obviously, there are disadvantages to this but I don't see what's wrong with sharing our lives in such a way.

I work in retail and I often have conversations with our customers about their lives, and nothing makes me happier than hearing about how happy they are. Whether they are happily married, travelling for the year or have lost 2 stone since their last shopping trip - listening to their happy stories never fails to put a smile on my face. Similarly, going on social media and seeing New Year declarations, Valentine's Day flowers or general musings of happiness has the same effect.

Some are judged for sharing their lives on the Internet and are criticised for not actually living whilst using their Wi-Fi. But I say, why the hell not! I'm guilty of the soppy tweet and the Instagram photo. We all are from time to time. That doesn't mean we're not living our lives or enjoying the moment at the same time. Yeah, I may stop and take a photo of my food before I eat it but I'm damn sure I'm going to enjoy eating it after I've added a filter or two.

The great thing about the Internet is the freedom we have. We have to embrace that freedom, even if it's an opinion on the latest beauty product.

I've been made to feel like my writing on this blog isn't good enough because it's not a thoughtful lifestyle piece and is possibly too generic. If I want to write about a lipstick I've been wearing then I will, and if I want to tweet or post photos about what I'm doing with my day then I'll do that too. There's no rules to the Internet. Never let anyone make you feel like you're worth less because of your social media profile or your blog.

Life isn't a competition. We have to start supporting, and stop comparing, ourselves to each other.
