MAKE-UP LIFE EXPECTANCY

Wednesday 20 November 2013

I knew make-up could expire but I've never really known how long it takes for products to go bad. I had to throw out my foundation recently because it started smelling a bit funny; I thought it was some of the new products I was using but I looked it up on the internet and found out that it's a sign it's expired. I've done a bit of research for you to let you know the usual life expectancy of make-up products.

A clear sign of how long your make-up lasts is on the product itself. I didn't know this until I started researching but there is a symbol on your cosmetics (on photo below, it's the sign below the barcode with a lid open and '24M' next to it) that tells you how long you should keep the product.

Look out for the sign on each of your products because it's useful to know when you should throw things out!

I've looked at the everyday products I use and this is their life expectancy:

Foundation
1 year life expectancy

Mascara
3-6 months

Concealer
24 months

Creams (BB)
18 months

Primer
1 year

Blush (cream)
1 year

Eyeshadow
2-3 years

Be warned: you shouldn't always follow this guideline, sometimes make-up will need to be thrown out sooner. The signs you should look for are: colour change, change in consistency, dryness and smell.

I hope this post helps you in some way - researching has definitely helped me so now I'm off for a clear out in my make-up bag.

much love,
Cally

  4. I throw my mascara out on a 3 month schedule. This is also why I only buy drugstore mascara, and wear falsies!
